About GNS

From 2007-2009 I volunteered at the Farm of the Child, a small non-profit orphanage off the northern coast of Honduras. The Farm, as we lovingly call it, has a beautiful mission to care for orphaned children and the neighboring community. Our school, St. Peter’s Elementary is considered one of the best schools in the state.  Proudly, after graduation from ninth grade, we are able to send orphan children from our project to one of the best schools in the country, Maria Regina, well prepared to succeed and become future leaders of their community. As amazing as this is, we do not have enough funding for our underprivileged neighbor students to continue past ninth grade.  Although they have prepared for the toughest schools in the country, our neighbors have limited resources which leave them no other option but to attend the local public school, where teachers strike for at least a third of the school year, classes are not taken seriously, and achievement is a secondary thought.

Each of our neighbor students are eligible for scholarships for elementary school (K-9) and University (12th grade in Honduras), meaning that if we can ensure a quality education for our Neighbor students for just two years of secondary school, we have created a pipeline to opportunity for deserving scholars.  Hence, the Good Neighbor Scholarship. Your support would not only give access to one more year of education for a young Honduran scholar, but potentially for six years!  The Good Neighbor Scholarship allows Honduran students with high potential to apply to be  sponsored to cover the expenses of attending a top tier Honduran high school for two years to give them the opportunity to reach their potential and contribute back to their families and communities as professionals.
